Adventures of a snarky nerdy feminist geek bookworm 20-something. Yeah, it's a niche. Deal with it.

About

Yo. Welcome to my blog. My name is Laura, but depending on the social circle you might hear me referred to as “lnicks” (EMTs and nerd types) or “glitter” or “glitter ninja” (gamers).

I am originally from the Great State of New Jersey (hence the traditional greeting at the beginning of this page) but am currently a living the cliche in the form of an MIT alum residing in the Bay Area. California is okay and stuff, but it’s not Jersey. I desperately miss real pizza, seasons, and bad attitudes. Also, people out here actually say stuff like “rad” and “gnarly,” which is effing weird.

I moved out here for an engineering job, but that didn’t work out so now I tutor high school kids in math instead. I’m applying to grad school instead of real jobs, because unemployment just keeps going up and the full year of unsuccessful job searching I did between May of ’09 and May ’10 has left me too discouraged to even attempt to realize my full potential. Screw you, Wall Street.

This blog is about the nonstop excitement of being me, including, but not limited too:

  • Rants about how the two party political system is destroying our democracy
  • Rants about feminism, masculism, and gender issues
  • Rants about how much the economy sucks and I am angry and bitter that my professional career has been destroyed before it even started
  • Rants about other things about which I have Strong Opinions
  • Deep and meaningful intellectual discussion about books and reading, and
  • Random anecdotes about my extreme geekhood and complete and total lack of a social life (these are actually two very slightly different topics)

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I am so frustrated with economy and politicians I can just scream. I wonder if there’s a way to get rid of Jobfox. It appears that when I look for a job – here’s Jobfox. I don’t see the need of paying in order to get work. It Sucks!

I commented on you ‘jobfox’ article today. Have a look at it.

    All the best

    Laura:

From some reason, I am getting old posts from the Job Fox article in my email. They have today’s date, but I compared them to your blog and they look to be repeat posts. Not sure what is going on here.

On another note, I read your About post and I want to encourage you that although the job search is tough, people do find jobs. They key is taking ownership of your career. No longer can we expect employers to do this for us. Welcome to the new way to work.

I am not sure if you situation or perspective has changed, but I would love to sepak with you about your career aspirations and see how I could help. If interested, reach out to me at nadams@firstimpressionscount.com.

    All the best,
